Cancer Registry

Lifetime Concern For You

The Cancer Institute at Alexian Brothers and St. Alexius Medical Center’s concern for your health and well-being will continue after you are discharged from our care. We hope this satisfactorily explains our purpose and how the registry helps our staff to promote quality care for you and other patients with your specific diagnosis.

What Is a Cancer Registry?

The data base at Alexian Brothers Medical Center and St. Alexius Medical Center provides a system for collecting and evaluating key information about patients with cancer. Information about your medical case will be compiled with that of all other patients with similar diagnoses. This data will be used for local, national and international research. Physicians can then study their effectiveness in treating patients.

The Cancer Registry Provides

Lifetime Follow-up

Cancer, like many diseases, requires lifetime follow-up. The Cancer Registry will obtain information about you every year. This information includes your health status, current physician and last exam date. We gather it in several ways:

  • If you are admitted or seen as an outpatient at Alexian Brothers Medical Center or St. Alexius Medical Center, our records will keep us informed about your health.
  • If you have not been at Alexian Brothers Medical Center or St. Alexius Medical Center, your physician(s) may be contacted. This will serve as a reminder to him or her that you are due for an annual check-up.
  • If your physician has not seen you within the last year or does not respond to our letter, we will then contact you (or an appropriate family member) by letter or by telephone.

Cancer Registry Data

The Cancer Registry prepares periodic reports from the data that is compiled to evaluate the results of treatment and the quality of care. It is only by constant evaluation that we can make certain we are providing the best possible care for all our patients.

Confidentiality Statement

Your medical history and follow-up information is kept in complete confidence in accordance with the Alexian Brothers Medical Center and St. Alexius Medical Center policy, Illinois State Center Registry policy and with the Illinois State Law.

Approved Cancer Program

The American College of Surgeons began accrediting hospital cancer programs in 1932 to improve the care of the cancer patient. Today, the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons approves hospital programs that maintain the four major required components; a cancer committee, multidisciplinary teaching conferences, patient care evaluations and a cancer registry. A ninety percent patient lifetime follow-up by the cancer registry is required for approval. The cancer programs at both Alexian Brothers Medical Center and St. Alexius Medical Center are approved by the American College of Surgeons.
